Doc. Dr. Miroslav Đorđević on changing the legal culture and improving the formal education of future judicial function holders

21 February 2023

On February 21, 2023, the “Judicial Reform Conference” organized by the Council of Europe and the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Serbia was held in the “Hyatt Regency” hotel. The reason for holding this event is the adoption of five new judicial laws which, at this stage, complete the reform process. About what has been done, as well as what still needs to be done on the legal and non-legal level in order to make the Serbian judiciary as fair and efficient as possible, numerous distinguished speakers expressed their opinion, including: Tobias Flessenkemper – head of the Council of Europe Office in Belgrade, H.E. Emanuele Giaufret, head of the EU delegation in Serbia, Christoph Poirel, director of the General Directorate for Human Rights and the Rule of Law of the Council of Europe, H.E. Annika Ben David, Ambassador of Sweden, Maja Popović, Minister of Justice, Jasmina Vasović, President of the Supreme Court.

One of the speakers was the research fellow of the Institute for Comparative Law, Doc. Dr. Miroslav Đorđević, whose presentation was about changing the legal culture at law faculties and improving the formal education of future holders of judicial functions. The publication “Serbian steps towards European justice standards” was also presented at this well-attended gathering, which was authored by research fellows of our Institute, Doc. Dr. Miroslav Đorđević and Dr. Miloš Stanić, as a part of project Institute of Comparative Law has conducted for Council of Europe in 2022. Publication can be downloaded HERE.

The conference highlighted the importance of these new laws as essential steps towards achieving a more effective and independent judiciary, but also stressed the necessity of ensuring their effective implementation.
